Here is an opportunity to own a car that may come along once in your lifetime: for sale is one 1988 Dinan turbocharged BMW M3. I have had the pleasure of using this car for over a decade, but acquisition of an 850Csi and an Audi TT means my old friend needs a new home. Here are recent pictures of the car. The diagonal gray rocker panel stripes have recently been freshened, repainted, and clear coated:

The first question everyone will ask is what power increase the turbo provides on a high compression S14 engine. To answer that, I went to a local reputable dyno shop and had the car tested. The charts shown in this weblink are the result:

238.4 HP at the rear wheels (translating to approximately 290 HP at the crank) and 250 ft/lbs of torque at the rear wheels. These numbers were essentially identical to the output of a 1999 M Coupe with Dinan stage 2 modifications that was at the dyno shop the same day, so this blown 4 cylinder engine puts out as much power as a modified 3.2L 6 cylinder). Even more power is possible from this engine (Dinan reported values of 320 HP), but I have lowered the maximum boost for reliable operation on premium 91 octane gas without risk of premature detonation. With a higher boost of 12-15 psi and octane boost (or 94 octane gas) I have no doubt this setup can deliver well over 300 HP at the crank. I wanted a safe reliable street car without stressing the engine and the current configuration delivers beautifully. This car has never tracked. The care and consideration for maintaining the engine shines through.

This car is my daily driver – it is NOT a garage queen or a fussy unpredictable bolt-on aftermarket mess. In my over 15 years of ownership I have had plenty of time to sort out the performance of the car and create a dependable, streetable pocket rocket like almost nothing else. You know the handling of the E30 M3 is legendary. This car is a blast to drive. The O.Z. wheels are 17 inch 3 piece works of art that I just had rebuilt last year at the factory at a cost of over $1,000. The car has received meticulous maintenance with Mobil 1 20-50W in the engine and Redline lubricants in the transmission and differential. Everything works including a tasteful stereo upgrade with Blaupunkt stereo components and a trunk mounted 10 CD changer. There are two DME “brains” in the car glove compartment with different mapping programs that can be selected by the driver for increased low end HP or torque. There are simply too many upgrades, modifications, and details to list. I have a folder of records for the car dating back to the day I bought it. I will be very, very sad to see it go, but I simply can’t justify having three supercars and it is time for me to try something new.

A few points bear mentioning: in my 15 years of ownership I have heard of only six Dinan kits ever being made. To my knowledge, only one or two other Dinan E30 M3 turbos exist on the planet (and I’ve searched long and hard to find other owners). This car is not “smog-legal” but will pass inspection with the bolt on catalytic converter included in the sale. Smogging will be the responsibility of the BUYER, since different states will have various requirements and the buyer may or may not be concerned with this issue. Also, the car is my daily driver, meaning that it is not perfect but shows the expected paint wear on front bumper, air dam, and small scratches on the doors from inevitable parking lot encounters. Overall the paint is in good condition for a 20 year old car but please factor that into your consideration. The color is factory original Salmon Silver with detail stripes as shown. Lastly, the car is highly collectible. Recent engine work has been performed by Frank Fahey here in San Diego including a very expensive top end rebuild. I have all the receipts. As I mentioned above, the gray rocker panel stripes have also been recently repainted and are in better shape than what it represented in the Photobucket pictures which were taken in August of this year.

Any prospective buyer who is SERIOUS about this awesome machine should contact me by e-mail with specific questions. The asking price is $23,000 or best offer within reason. The price is negotiable for a quick and uncomplicated sale without a lot of excuses or stories. No joyriders of curiosity seekers. This is a serious sale for a buyer interested in owning a collectible piece of automotive history.
