LAS VEGAS - To the uninitiated, SEMA is an annual convention that is held in Las Vegas during the first week of November. SEMA stands for Specialty Equipment Market Association, and it features nearly 1500 exhibitors, all of whom are displaying their premiere products and wares at the beautiful Las Vegas Convention Center. With more than 12 miles of aisleways, it takes the nearly 80,000 visitors a good couple of days to cover the entire show.
SEMA also has a sister show - AAPEX. AAPEX stands for Automotive Aftermarket Parts Expo, and features nearly 1800 exhibitors from around the world. Again, close to 80,000 people attend the AAPEX show, which is hosted at the Las Vegas Sands Convention Center. Its a multi-floored event that takes strong legs, good shoes and a few days to cover as well.
Ive never attended a SEMA show before, so this was a first for me; as Roadfly Executive Editor I was tasked with photographing the show and documenting it for this article. I walked in to the place a bit wide-eyed and am certain that I missed many cool things but you have to understand that the entire event is a bit overwhelming. Every world-class manufacturer is represented at the show, and the booths are big, bold and very high-tech. Two-story booths are not uncommon, and there were more Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Bentleys and Aston Martins than you could shake a stick at.
We arrived in Las Vegas late Monday evening, so we were already behind the 8-ball for covering the entire show - we got an early start on Tuesday morning and with fresh legs we took a brief cab ride to the show from our hotel. Traffic was fairly light, so we were confident that arriving to the show on Tuesday wasnt such a bad thing afterall.
