European Specifications Announced for MINI COOPER

Woodcliff Lake, February 27, 2001

Coinciding with the revealing of MINI ONE * in Geneva, BMW Group has announced European performance figures for the MINI COOPER, due in the US from March 2002.

The specifications for the European version show the MINI COOPER developing 115 hp with a 0-100 km time of just over nine seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 125 mph. Figures for the 160 hp MINI COOPER S have not yet been released.

The 1,598 cc engine, tuned for European markets, produces a very healthy 190 ft/lb of torque at 4,500 rpm, with the car weighing in at 2,316 Lb. European average fuel consumption is measured at 35 miles per US gallon. (converted)

Indicating the car's handling abilities, the track of the MINI COOPER is 4' 6" from an overall car width of only 6' (including mirrors) and the car's short overhangs give a wheel spacing only 3 feet shorter than the entire vehicle length.

Supplementing the car's safety features which includes six airbags and stability control, the brakes are discs all round, with the front brakes ventilated. The car features 15" rims as standard or optional 16". Both come in light alloy with a silver or white finish.

The manual transmission is a 5 speed with details of the automatic option to follow.

The MINI ONE and the MINI COOPER go on sale in the UK from July 7 2001. BMW GB is reporting strong demand for the products with over 30,000 enquiries and 1,500 orders after the car debuted at the Birmingham Motor Show.

MINI is a brand of the BMW Group which includes BMW and Rolls Royce from 2003. The MINI COOPER and MINI COOPER S go on sale in the US from March 2002. MINI will sell around 18,000 COOPER and COOPER S' per year through approximately 70 dealers from BMW Group's US network. MINI will have its own distinct retail environment with dedicated sales staff. Prices for MINI COOPER will start below $18,000.

* MINI ONE is the Entry Level MINI product in the European Market. It will not be sold in the US.
