FEATURE-Building autos to order challenges staid industry

NEW YORK,May 21 (Reuters) - Nearly a century after Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:F - news) revolutionalized the auto-making industry with the assembly line, some industry analysts say it's time to overhaul mass production and deliver build-to-order cars even faster.
Up to 85 percent of car buyers don't get the exact car they want, industry analysts estimate, and if automakers adopt build to order, a manufacturing structure known as BTO, they could boost customer satisfaction while substantially reducing parts inventories and their huge costs.
