Good Worldwide Growth Rates Take BMW to the Best May Sales Result of All Times

MUNICH, Germany, June 12, 2001 (BMW Group) - For the first time in its history, BMW has sold more than 80,000 cars worldwide (80,700 units) during the month of May, representing an increase of 7.9 percent compared with the same month last year.

This means that from January to May this year, a total of around 378,500 BMW automobiles were delivered to customers, which is an increase of 9.9 percent over the previous year.

Dr. Michael Ganal, Member of the Board of BMW AG responsible for sales, had the following comment to make at a sales conference: "Our assumption and statement, that the premium segment grow better than the market as a whole, has been confirmed once more. The above average growth of BMW shows clear evidence of the substance and power of the brand."

This positive sales development is based on increases in all the world's major markets. BMW volume sales in Germany have recorded an increase of 2.3 percent (to 108,500 units), even through the market as a whole is still showing a slightly downward trend.

In the UK, BMW volume sales increased up to May by 13.3 percent to 35,100 automobiles, which is well above the market as a whole, which is showing restrained growth (approx. 3 percent rise). The BMW Group achieved its largest increase in Europe in Switzerland, where a total of nearly 6,100 vehicles were delivered to customers. This marks a 31.8 percent increase over the same period last year. Altogether, in the sales region of Europe (excluding Germany) around 126,800 BMW automobiles were sold, which is a 6.9 percent rise.

In BMW's second-largest distribution market - the USA - around 87,000 automobiles were sold in the first five months (plus 18.5 percent). The rates of increase for BMW in the Asian and African markets are just as satisfactory. An average of 18 percent more BMW cars were delivered to customers here.
