2011 BMW 535i Road Test

Rating: 8.1/10 (7 votes cast)

For 2011, BMW completely redesigned the 5 Series. The 2004 – 2010 5 series was successful but wasn’t able to maintain the momentum of the previous generation 5 Series mostly due to its styling and the 2011 5 Series changes all that! The new car is styled similarly to the new 7 Series with a visually long hood and aggressive front end.

2011 BMW M3 Test Drive & Review

Rating: 8.3/10 (3 votes cast)

The BMW M3 is one of the finest driver’s cars ever made, and I was finally lucky enough to spend a week with one.

The heart of the M3 is an exquisite 4.0L V8, making 414hp at a wild 8300rpm. Peak torque is 295 lb-ft, but that entire figure is available at just 3900rpm, a stunning mark of tractability in such a high-revving screamer.

2011 BMW M3

2011 BMW M3

Our test car was equipped with a 7-speed DCT (BMW’s name for the fancy dual-clutch gearbox), and the transmission—like other vehicle characteristics like throttle response and suspension—can be adjusted from ‘nice and easy’ to ‘neckbreaking.’

2011 M3s equipped with this transmission have gone as low as 3.9 sec to 60mph, and 12.5 sec in the 1/4-mile. Yet due to the engine’s powerband, it’s remarkably civilized around town.

Gearing is perfect; even in 7th gear, the car is never caught flat-footed. In fact, at 2000rpm in 7th the car will be going just 50mph! That is great for acceleration, bad for fuel economy: the M3 manages just 14 mpg city and 20 highway and gets slapped with the gaz-guzzler tax.

That’s really the only chink in the car’s armor, and the M3 instantly became the car by which I measure all sports cars by.

2011 Infiniti M56 Road Test

Monday, April 18th, 2011
VN:F [1.9.22_1171]
Rating: 5.2/10 (5 votes cast)

Sleek and curvaceous, the 2011 Infiniti M56 is an exciting and luxurious ride. Infiniti has lengthened this year’s models dimensions, increasing the length, height and width overall. Its new powerful engine and flowing redesign are all intact from the 2010 model as well. RoadflyTV and host Ross Rapoport took a good look at the M56 and they were very impressed.

YouTube Preview Image

Under the hood, the Infiniti boasts some true and surprising power. The M56 has a 5.6-liter V8 engine that produces 420 horsepower and gets 417 pound-feet of torque. This impressive output lets the M get to 60 mph in a time of roughly 4.9 seconds. The seven-speed automatic transmission is flawless, shifting gears with a fluid ease, making great use out of all 420 horses.

Inside, the Infiniti shines. The dash and interior materials are made from Japanese ash wood, giving a the M56 a unique and timeless aesthetic. Comfortableness and luxury are not a problem here.

Altogether the Infiniti M56, sold as the Nissan Fuga in Japan, is a seductive competitor to such European hallmarks as the BMW 5-Series or the Mercedes-Benz E550 and is hot on their heels in terms of desirability and driving enthusiasm. Drivers seeking a classy and distinguished alternative to the European market would do well to take a close look at the M56.

Rating: 8.8/10 (4 votes cast)

The 2011 Porsche Cayenne S Tiptronic has been completely redesigned for 2011. The engine powering this new Cayenne is a 4.8-liter aluminum V8 which features VarioCam Plus, dry-sump lubrication and direct fuel injection. The engine produces 400 hp at 6500 rpm and 369 lb-ft of torque at 3500 rpm, which is up 15 hp from 2010. Combined with the new eight-speed automatic transmission, the Cayenne S happily runs from 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds. Top speed is a very fast 160 mph.

The interior has received a major upgrade as well. Now resembling the interior of the Porsche Panamera, it’s much cleaner, sportier, and sexier.

The 2011 Porsche Cayenne S weighs about 400 pounds less than the 2010 model. This weight savings helps considerably with acceleration, braking, and handling and contributes to improved fuel economy.

2011 VW Touareg VR6 Sport Road Test

Friday, April 15th, 2011
VN:F [1.9.22_1171]
Rating: 10.0/10 (3 votes cast)

Host Ross Rapoport spent a week in the all-new 2011 Volkswagen Touareg VR6 Sport, a brand new redesigned premium SUV that is as fun to drive as it is comfortable and elegant.

Sharing some design cues with the far-more expensive Porsche Cayenne, the Touareg has flowing lines and a pronounced back-end, making its silhouette look eerily similar to its European cousin. Also for 2011, the Touareg has managed to drop over 400 pounds while increasing its cargo capacity and overall size, a fairly noteworthy improvement over the course of one year.

The Touareg for 2011 comes in several different engine options, including a brand new hybrid option which unfortunately we didn’t get to test drive. However, our 3.6L VR6 engine, with 280 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque, was more than capable of getting us around town with its ample power and acceleration. Gas mileage is decent considering the engine and the weight, you’ll be mustering roughly 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. With the hybrid engine, you’ll be getting slightly better numbers: a supercharged V6 with 333 horses and 324 pound feet, with gas mileage coming in at 20/27. Do the math and that extra power and mileage might not be enough to justify the additional $9,000 or so it takes to upgrade to the hybrid engine. And all of the Touaregs come with VW’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive system to manage all the twists and turns your commute can throw at you.

Inside, the Touareg is functional and efficient, if a little plain. The execution is user-friendly, with a highly intuitive climate control and navigation system. All in all, the cabin is practical, but doesn’t contain any particular cutting-edge technology that you might expect in a SUV at this price. In fact, the Touareg doesn’t contain real leather seats, a sunroof, or a third row of seats.

The 2011 Touareg has undergone some very desirable upgrades and changes for this year, and remains a very powerful front-runner in the midsize and luxury SUV segment, giving many of its more expensive competitors in its class a run for their money. Our VR6 Sport Touareg starts off at $45,600 with an as tested price of $46,420.

2011 Audi A8 Road Test & Review

Sunday, February 27th, 2011
VN:F [1.9.22_1171]
Rating: 8.3/10 (4 votes cast)

Join RoadflyTV host Ross Rapoport as he reviews the beautiful all-new 2011 Audi A8 sedan.  The A8 goes up against the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class and holds its own.

Watch the 2011 Audi A8 Car Review Video on our YouTube Channel.

While looking more compact than its predecessor, the A8 is touting the longest and widest standard wheelbase in its class and even with the quattro, Audi was able to keep the weight down with an aluminum body.  Powering the A8 is a powerful 4.2L V8 engine that produces 372 horsepower paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission (with sport mode and shift knob).  With this pairing, while less horsepower than the competitors, the A8 manages to do more with less, with a 0-60 mph time of 5.7 seconds (in the ballpark of competition).  Drivers will also be pleased with this engine/transmission pairing as the 8-speed transmission allows for low RPMs at high speeds, keeping this luxury sport sedan’s mileage reasonable at 17 mpg city and 27 mpg highway.

In true Audi style, the A8′s interior is gorgeous and futuristic.  High quality leather, wooden accents, and suede compliment the ever-evolving technology features in the vehicle.  The most notable feature is probably the MMI (Multimedia Interface) system.  The MMI has a neat new feature for those who have grown tired of the rotary dial or have yet to master it:  the touch pad.  The touch pad recognizes writing with the finger tip (though knob is still available) for easy navigation through the entertainment system. Tied for second is probably the impressive stereo system option ($6,300) with tweeters that pop out of the dash and the 22-way power adjustable driver’s seat.

Even with the classy, appealing design, sporty drive, and luxury features, the Audi A8 still starts lower than the likes of the 7 Series and S-Class with a base MSRP of $78,050 and an as-tested price of $93,525  (compared to the starting prices for the 7 Series $82,500 and S-Class’ $91,000) so if you’re in the market for a luxury sedan, the A8 is definitely worth a test drive.

2011 Jaguar XJL Supersport Review

Sunday, December 26th, 2010
VN:F [1.9.22_1171]
Rating: 10.0/10 (1 vote cast)

Join host Ross Rapoport as he reviews the 2011 Jaguar XJL Supersport, the L referring to the long wheelbase version and the “supersport” classification warranted by its impressive performance.  True to its heritage, the XJL lives up to Jaguar’s old sales slogan of “Grace, Space, Pace”.

YouTube Preview Image

The XJ first hit roads in 1968 and has been evolving ever since. For 2011, Jaguar took a risk with the re-design of the XJL’s rear styling. While the car remains distinctly Jaguar, the modern style updates are a nice change.  On the inside, both the driver and the passengers will be riding in style and comfort.

Performance-wise, the XJL Supersport is a beast with a 0-60mph time of 4.7 seconds and a  5-liter V8 that produces 510 horsepower and 461 lb-ft of torque.  With the supercharger, max torque can be achieved at a mere 2,500 rpm.  Considering the output of the XJL, the fuel economy averages of 15 city and 21 highway can be considered decent to good for a vehicle of this type.

As Ross mentioned in the review, sticker shock might hit prospective buyers when they see a starting price of $113,200 (as-tested price of $114,075). But, when considering its competitors (the the Porsche Panamera, Aston Martin Rapide, Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7-Series), the XJL’s performance and price are unmatched.
